Young Josh and his cousin Bernie learn life lessons and find adventure as they explore the artifacts in Great-Great-Grandpa Kim's life chest. A centuries-old map directs them to the Great Wall of China and a stash of gold coins hidden inside. Once there, they meet a malicious mother and desperate daughter with quite different motivations for stopping them.

The history of the coins is tied to the story of the explorer Marco Polo. After his adventures in China ended in 1292, Marco gave the coins and his Dynasty chest to Gurmi, his Sherpa guide. Gurmi's family created chests of their own and passed them down through the generations—but the legendary gold coins were lost.
